The Dates Are Out, The Notification Is Not, And That Gap Is Where Rumours Live#

Here is the position as of late September 2026.

The examination dates are confirmed. NTA will conduct UGC NET December 2026 from 14 to 19 December 2026, with 20 and 21 December held as buffer dates in case additional sessions are required.

The notification has not been released. It is expected in October 2026, and it is the document that carries the application window, the fee, the city list, the detailed schedule by subject and shift, and any procedural changes.

That month-long gap between a confirmed date and a published notification is the most productive period for misinformation in the whole cycle. Application dates circulate that nobody announced. Pattern changes are asserted without a source. Every year, some candidates act on one of these and miss something real.

So: dates confirmed, notification pending, and roughly ninety days of preparation time from now. Here is what to do with them.

Background: What The Examination Is And How It Is Built#

Purpose. UGC NET determines eligibility for Assistant Professor posts, for the award of Junior Research Fellowship, and now for admission to doctoral programmes. These are three separate qualification outcomes cut at three different thresholds from the same examination.

Mode. Computer-based test, conducted by the National Testing Agency.

Structure. Two papers in a single continuous session of three hours, with no break between them.

Paper 1 carries 50 questions worth 100 marks, common to all candidates, covering teaching and research aptitude across ten prescribed units.

Paper 2 carries 100 questions worth 200 marks in your chosen subject.

No negative marking in either paper. This is the single most actionable fact about the examination and it is routinely underused. Every unanswered question is a guaranteed zero where a guess carries positive expected value. You should finish with all 150 questions answered.

Two terms worth fixing:

Buffer dates. Additional dates held in reserve by the conducting body, used only if the scheduled window cannot accommodate all candidates and subjects. Your own date could fall on one, so keep 20 and 21 December clear.

Subject code. Every NET subject has a code used at application. Selecting the wrong code is an error that cannot be corrected after the window closes, and it happens more often than you would think.

The Confirmed Calendar And The New Subjects#

December 2026 examination window 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 buffer dates Where the marks sit Paper 1 50 questions, 100 marks Paper 2 100 questions, 200 marks, your subject No negative marking in either paper. Answer all 150 questions. Subject list expansion Statistics and Forestry added Subject list now stands at 87, up from 85. Both were introduced from the June cycle. Dates confirmed by NTA. The notification, carrying the application window and subject-wise schedule, is expected in October 2026.

The two new subjects. Statistics and Forestry were added to the UGC NET subject list from the June cycle, taking the total from 85 to 87.

Why this matters beyond the two disciplines. A newly introduced subject typically attracts a smaller applicant pool in its first cycles, and there is no bank of previous year papers to work from. For candidates eligible in Statistics or Forestry, that is a genuine mixed picture: a thinner field, and less material to prepare against. The sensible approach for a new subject is to work directly from the published syllabus, use standard postgraduate texts for each unit, and treat the syllabus document as the only reliable guide to scope.

The 90-Day Plan#

Roughly ninety days remain. Here is how to allocate them, weighted by where marks actually are.

Days 1 to 30: map and close gaps.

Start with the official syllabus for both papers. Print it. Go through Paper 2 unit by unit and mark each as strong, partial or untouched. Most candidates find three or four untouched units and do not know it until they do this.

Attack the untouched units first. Working on strong areas feels productive and moves your score least.

Run Paper 1's easy units in parallel. Information and Communication Technology, Higher Education System and Communication have small, finite, factual syllabuses. A few focused hours each secures around thirty marks.

Days 31 to 60: build and practise.

Second pass through Paper 2, now with a factual scaffolding sheet per unit: names, works, dates, concepts and their associations. This is what matching and sequencing questions draw on, and reading alone does not produce it.

Paper 1's practisable units. Data Interpretation and Mathematical Reasoning respond quickly to twenty questions a day. Humanities candidates who fear these are usually surprised by the improvement.

Begin previous year papers, unit by unit, immediately after covering each unit rather than saving them. Ten years are available free on the NTA portal.

Days 61 to 85: full papers and diagnosis.

Both papers together, three hours, no break, twice a week rising to three. The endurance of a continuous 150-question session is itself trainable and it does not appear on its own.

Analyse every mock within a day. Sort errors into four categories: content not known, misread the question, confused two similar concepts, or ran out of time. Those need four different responses.

Days 86 to 90: consolidate.

No new material. Revise from your own error log and factual sheets. Confirm your admit card details, centre location and reporting time. Sleep normally.

And throughout: watch for the notification. Check ugcnet.nta.nic.in twice a week through October. The application window will be short, the correction window shorter, and subject code selection is not fixable afterwards.

UGC NET December 2026 Dates New Subjects Strategy 2

The Application Mistakes That Cost People The Cycle#

Selecting the wrong subject code. Your subject must match your postgraduate qualification under the eligibility rules, and the code must be correct. This is not fixable after the correction window.

Missing the eligibility percentage. A master's degree with the required minimum percentage, with relaxation for reserved categories. Candidates below the threshold are ineligible regardless of performance.

Photograph and signature specifications. Enforced literally, and a recurring cause of rejected applications.

Not checking the age rules if targeting JRF. The JRF upper age limit applies as on a cut-off date stated in the notification, with relaxation for reserved categories and women. Assistant Professor eligibility has no age limit.

Ignoring the buffer dates. Keep 20 and 21 December free. If your subject is scheduled onto a buffer date and you have committed to something else, that is a lost cycle.

The Week Of The Examination#

Confirm the administrative details early. Admit card downloaded and printed, identity document matching your application exactly in name spelling and date of birth, centre located with a realistic travel plan, and reporting time noted with margin. Discrepancies found at the centre cannot be resolved there.

Check the prohibited items list in the admit card. It is enforced literally, and it covers more than candidates expect.

Keep the buffer dates free. With 20 and 21 December held in reserve, a subject scheduled onto a buffer date catches out anyone who has committed to something else.

Do not learn new material. Anything added in the final week will not be reliable across a continuous three-hour session, and the anxiety cost exceeds the benefit.

Revise from your own error log and factual sheets. By this point these describe your specific weaknesses better than any textbook describes the syllabus.

Rehearse the attempt plan. First pass banking certain answers, second pass on marked questions, and a hard deadline at which you fill every remaining blank. With no negative marking, finishing with unanswered questions is the one clearly avoidable error.

Sleep normally. Three hours of continuous concentration across 150 questions degrades measurably with fatigue, and the marks gained by studying late are smaller than those lost by arriving tired.

After The Examination: Keys, Challenges And Response Sheets#

The cycle does not end when you leave the centre, and the stages that follow are worth understanding.

The provisional answer key. NTA publishes a provisional key after the examination, alongside your recorded responses. This lets you compute your likely score before the result.

The challenge window. Candidates may contest specific answers within a short window, usually on payment of a fee per question that is refunded if the challenge succeeds. Challenges must be supported by evidence rather than assertion, and they are considered by subject experts.

Whether to challenge. If you have a genuine, citable basis for believing an answer is wrong, it is worth doing, since successful challenges result in the key being revised for all candidates. If you simply disagree with an answer, it is not.

The final key and the result. The final key is published after challenges are considered, and the result follows, with qualification determined against the applicable cut-offs for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission.

Download and keep your response sheet and scorecard. These are the evidence of your performance, and the scorecard is the document you will submit for applications, fellowships and admissions.

And if you have qualified for JRF, start the clock. The fellowship must be taken up by enrolling in a recognised doctoral programme within the specified window, after which it lapses. Identify target institutions immediately rather than waiting for the next admission cycle.

Deciding Which Qualification To Target#

The same paper produces three outcomes at three thresholds, and knowing which one you are aiming at should shape how hard you push.

If you are within the JRF age window, meaning under thirty, or under thirty-five with the applicable relaxation, target the fellowship line specifically. It is the only one of the three that expires with age, and it carries ₹37,000 a month rising to ₹42,000 across up to five years. Everything else remains available later.

If you are outside that window, Assistant Professor eligibility is the target, and it has lifetime validity with no age limit. There is no urgency beyond your own career timing.

If your goal is doctoral admission specifically, note that the admission validity of a NET score is short, commonly one year. Qualify in the cycle preceding the admission cycle you intend to enter, rather than qualifying early and waiting.

The practical difference in preparation. The JRF threshold sits materially above the Assistant Professor line, which sits above the PhD-admission line. A candidate targeting the fellowship needs the neglected Paper 1 units secured and the untouched Paper 2 units closed, because that margin is where the difference between the lines is found.

And attempt the December cycle even if you intend to reattempt. Qualification at any of the three levels is retained, and a live attempt tells you precisely where you stand in a way mock tests do not.

Frequently Asked Questions#

When is UGC NET December 2026?#

From 14 to 19 December 2026, with 20 and 21 December held as buffer dates. Keep the buffer dates free, since your subject could be scheduled onto one.

Has the notification been released?#

Not at the time of writing. It is expected in October 2026 and will carry the application window, fee, subject-wise schedule and any procedural changes. Check ugcnet.nta.nic.in rather than acting on circulated dates.

What new subjects have been added?#

Statistics and Forestry, introduced from the June cycle, taking the subject list from 85 to 87.

Is there negative marking?#

No. Neither paper penalises a wrong answer, which means you should attempt all 150 questions and leave nothing blank. Candidates trained on penalised examinations lose marks to this habit.

How are the two papers weighted?#

Paper 1 carries 100 marks from 50 questions and Paper 2 carries 200 marks from 100 questions, conducted together in a single three-hour session. Paper 2 is two thirds of your combined score.

How should I prepare for a newly added subject with no past papers?#

Work directly from the published syllabus, using standard postgraduate texts unit by unit. Without a past-paper bank the syllabus document is your only reliable guide to scope, and the applicant pool is likely to be thinner in early cycles.

What are the biggest application errors?#

Selecting the wrong subject code, which cannot be corrected after the window closes, missing the minimum percentage requirement, and photograph or signature specification failures.

Where should I verify everything?#

On the NTA UGC NET portal, which publishes the notification, subject-wise syllabuses, previous year papers, answer keys and the examination schedule. Use it rather than secondary sources, particularly during the period before the notification appears.
